Competition Prompt:

If you could go back in time and create an app for the year 2020, what would it be?

The Scenario:

During the 2020 pandemic, both pet adoption and the use of online dating platforms increased. What if there was a pet adoption website that matches your personality to a pet, much like a dating site?

The Solution:

In order to find the most suitable dog, the adoption center should match the personality, not just surface-level attributes. If we create a dog adoption site that functions like a dating site, new parents will find a more suitable personality match for their household. This will better prepare new pet owners to keep their dogs happy and decrease pet returns.

A Cheeky Presentation

6 min. Video

In the Begging there was Chaos

Our team was randomly selected, and we began the project by introducing ourselves and brainstorming about all of the common themes of 2020. We sifted through ideas about inspirational quotes, toilet paper trackers, and fitness apps. We reminisced that people were lonely and were therefore seeking companionship. We had several dog owners in the group and so we landed on pet adoption, but we needed something to differentiate us from our biggest competitor, Petfinder.

The Biggest Competition

As the UX teammates investigated Petfinder, we identified that the site provides a questionnaire to match you with a new pet. Most of the questions revolve around lifestyle and physical traits, but not personality.

As we searched for a way to make our site stand out, I began to search for articles on loneliness in the pandemic. Several articles showed up around online dating apps and there were many about pet adoption. Is there any connection between these two?

Romantic Color Palette

Traditional colors for love are pink, red, and light blue. We began with these colors and found them to have a bubble gum juvenile feel. The words we wanted to convey were romantic and playful, so I suggested earth-based tones. The pink became a darker Coral, and the light blue became a deeper teal color.

Mood Words

Playful.     Romantic.     Calm.
